Significantly less homeless are visible in Cancún (not to bother white fat tourists with poverty on display). This woman has her fix spot in Cancún downtown though, transgressing in a private nap in the earlier evening and going to bed later in the night, when the shop closes and provides for a "roof".

Chíchen Itzá, UN world heritage and most visited site in Mex (20.000 visotors/day) is similar to a huge shopping mall with hundreds of souvenir stalls (selling exactly the same). Surprisingly, you still can take fotos which transmit the illusion of a spiritual, and romantic site. It is special in comparison to other sites, since Toltec and Maya tribes and their styles and gods intermingled here in this particluar place (the third most important tribe in Mex being the Aztecs). The 35 meter deep cenote (natural well) contained thousands of precious stones and bones of human sacrifices now displayed in museums in US and Mex.

A free cultural program in the Parque Santa Lucia attracted Hundreds of people. Spanish poems, Mayan music, and Mayan Dance were parts of the "Serenata Yucateca" this evening. I enjoyed most the Ballet Titular del Ayuntamiento de Mérida.

5 th avenue in christmas craziness, the Rockefeller tree not as impressive this year (was installed in the Thirties during depression to the joy of the starving), and a huge christmas tree in the appartement to be proud of...!!! We were disapponted by the Sex Museum though, very selective, no scholarly work, indecisive display strategies, no mission statement, male bias.....uuuhhh....

What to do in New York? Shopping! A nice walk downtown, a wonderful coffee shop with more than 100 types and roasts of aromatic coffee beans, the Prada Flagship Store of Rem Kohlhaas with its downsides, Dot´s favourite English restaurant and some hours as an industry spy in the dog clothing sector filled my day very nicely :-)

Of course my flight was cancelled. The alternative flight was delayed, but I was nevertheless happy to get away from the snow disaster. Landed safely in Chelsea/Manhattan in the beautifully painted (just finished!) supernice appartement of Dot (already filled with boxes of christmas decoration) Suprise surprise: AlsoLea from the Netherlands (we all met the Visual Sociology Summer School 2006) is guest at Dot´s house these days. Fun and overwhelming hospitality!

John Zipp, our chair, coincidently as "father" at the table -- to his right the most exciting job candidate for me among all six incoming applicants (a job talk and a grad students interview to attend for every applicant. Evaluation sheets, discussions, excitement, time investment, sometimes bothering during busy finals week, but valuable...).

The "Face of America" proved that he is also the "Chef of America". An invitation for vegan dinner at my nicest love lights Michelle and Dave (=cook) made me speechless: Selfmade (!!!) vegan breadcrumbs covering soft and delicious eggplant, garlic bread with herbs and angel hair with spicy sauce. Hell, aaahhh...heaven! This was the best dinner since months!

My old bike? I posted it on the Akron Freecycle Mailinglist (people proposing and requesting stuff instead of throwing it away, lived recycle reality, extremly busy productive list, viva alternative economy!). I got a call within 1 minute, my old slightly damaged bike was picked up 30 minutes later. It will be the christmas present for a daughter of a 10-head family (with no christmas presents yet...)

Today Marie made it possible: We picked up my new "teal Dodge", which was a present by many department members *thanks again* to compensate for my accident. The teal Dodge will substitute my pink Cadillac with a much better technological performance. And with fancy superspeed silver helmet (I had to promise I use one now), but since here is winter again and ice everywhere I am scared to get it going...

I am member of the GradCROW which is an interdisciplinary committe for feminist gradstudents and faculty. We honoured 22 feminist mentors with certificates and gifts embedded in a high tea event. It was wonderful and interesting! I am CROW chairwoman for the organization of a gender symposium on April 3rd and 4th next year: I already invited Judith Lorber as a keynote speaker (yeih!!!)! She is the grande dame of social constructivism and now working on "degendering", I am very excited about it!

Absoluetly unbelievable, hilarious, surprising, flattering, awesame: I got a gift card for a $280 - bike! The department including the custodians collected that for me, and Marie designed this huge cheque which now is in my office (as you see there are also Graz-postcards :-)! I was speechless! Today everybody who contributed got an Ulla-Klopf postcard and a Mozartkugel and next week I will have a bike. I only had to promise that I use a helmet now...

I made a cool observation! While walking on Crosby street around my corner, I suddenly saw shoes on the electricity cables. I walked a few blocks, again a pair of shoes....after a few houses a pair of bears! I was clueless. I know, that Crosby street is a prostitute and drug - street (the scene was moved here from West Market Street). I asked several people who had no clue ("It is kinda American thing" "Don't know"). Good that we have smart sociologists, my friend and girl gang researcher Mary Laske finally knew the answer: the shoes are orientation markers for people interested in drugs and often serve as indicators for crack houses. Interesting!

Marie offered to bring me to the Emergency Room/Trauma (= dt. Ambulanz) of the "Summa Health System"(City Hospital, which is hopefully covered by my obligatory health insurance: an impossible, prohibitve thing for nearly 50 million Americans). I am glad, my knee and foot hurt like hell. The next 4 hours I sit in a wheelchair, x-rays are taken, 7 different people ask me the same question, my automatically generated bracelet says that I am 57 years old, I meet the most energetic nurse of my life, I am touched because Marie is so nice to spend all this time for me and a prescription for heavy painkillers (which I probably do not consume) is filled. My bones are not broken and I have new crutches (which I do not have to turn back). A wrap decorates my knee, and I will elevate the leg as much as possible.

I painfully learned a lot about law and (traffic) order. A car hit me on a crosswalk (="Zebrastreifen"), when I was biking home on the sidewalk in the evening (I had a green "go!"- sign). My pink cadillac is rotten and my leg hurted badly. I was so happy and thankful that within a few minutes not only police and ambulance, but also Suzanne and Dana (and coincdently also April and Chris) showed up and supported me on site.
The story found a surprising end: The officer explained that I have a luck, the car driver does not insist on a record. They would have to fine ME (min. $ 150,-) because I was biking on the sidewalk. That's the law. You have to know that biking on the street is nearly impossible. Everybody knows that. Cardrivers yell and honk at you all the time and it is not safe. That is why most (of the few) bicyclists use the sidewalk. However, we left the scene like nothing would have happened and I learned some new things: being pedestrian or biker here is not a good idea, U.S. law is tricky, I have friends, and cops want to save a time.

I attend a NVIVO seminar in Cleveland and we leave Akron at 7.20 am. It takes us more than 2 hours to go to Cleveland (it is a 40 minutes drive) due to rain-traffic-chaos. Always expect traffic related bad surprises and get up earlier!

A week of social movement! Yesterday another rally took place in Akron, organized by the rape crisis center. Unfortunately my camera left me and I only have pictures from our sign-preparation as members of the local SWS group. Take Back The Night attracted approx. 50 people, survivors of rape spoke up compellingly in the public, and we made a march with our signs shouting following chants through the beginning night:

Akron Unite, Take Back the Night!
Hey Hey Ho Ho, rape and violence have to go!
Gay or straight, black or white: I have the right to walk at night!
Sexist, racist, anti-gay, don't you take my night away!
No matter how you dress, No matter where you go, Yes means Yes and No means No!
We have the power, we have the might, the streets are ours, take back the night!

I go more in depth with American protest culture and meet awesame couragious people. I participated in a protest against the logo and the name of the "Cleveland Indians". Michelle J. who just fnished a sociological 250 pages mastress-piece about the the group Committee of 500 Years of Dignity and Resistance, took me up to Cleveland where 42.000 human beings gathered for mass hyteria: playoff games baseball, I was perplex. We stood outthere 2 hours and experienced mass flows of strange people, yelling at us, on person protesting us, police forcing us to go one meter back. I felt so honoured and happy to be on the right side.

The "Active Research Method Teaching Lab" was opened at our department. A great day! Kathy Feltey, my advisor, is one of the partners in an interdisciplinary supported project. Hope more fotos can be online soon! This part of the lab is a focus group and interview room with "wrong mirror", this allows colleagues to give feedback on your work. Fancy. Lectures and workshops will be going on for at least 3 years. Cool times to come...(registered and payed muuuuch for an NVIVO workshop next week (software to analyze qualitative data)...am happily looking forward to it!

Apropos gay: Did I ever say that my neighbourhood Highland Square is kind of gay owned? The famous Angel Falls coffee is there for example. At my last visit I saw that a public knitting circle is meeting there (women aged 40 to 70+ and one man, here presenting his work to a colleague). I also learned that knitting is good to keep active and connected both halfs of the brain! I should start with it, it is getting cold here....

Yesterday was National Coming Out Day and the Akron Pridecenter is doing nice action all week. As I attend a 'Violence and Victims' class (in which I have to write a paper) I did some field research and joined a Hate Crimes Vigil gathering in a nearby church (with a harp playing female priest, awesome!). One speaker said: "The situation which gay/trans and bi-people are facing in this coountry is very easy explained. It is 1960, we are in Alabama and we are black. It is legal in Ohio to discriminate us in housing, it is legal to discriminate us at the workplace." Several cases were cited of the year 2007, in which genderradical people are beaten to death or shot, also by the police ("gaybashing"). Ohio does not have a hate crime law that includes gender and sexuality issues. You might wanna refer to on overview map on hate crime legislation in the US and stay tuned, I definitly wanna know more about it an will do a paper on transphobia and hate crime, "because the T is often left out in LGBTQ..."

Akron is the birthplace of Televangelism and Rex Hubbard, the father of Televangelists, died this September. He was the first one to discover the TV for preaching and moneymaking in the Fifties. Elvis Presley was a big fan and Rex spoke at his funeral in 1977. He left a monumental useless tower in Akron/Cuhayoga Falls, which people call Rex's Erection.

Davea, my swinging roommate got 21 today, and Suzanne and I were doing a choky-birthday cake for her. The thrill is that she can drink alcohol now, this is stated in the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984. This law was a problem 2001 for first daughter Jenna Bush, who was cited twice for underage drinking. She also might have been a pothead, obviously encouraging her creativity: meanwhile she's over 21 and wrote a book on her experiences in Latin America while working for UNICEF.

Graduate students are motivated (obliged) to contribute to our Snack Bar at the department on Thursdays, sales revenue is dedicated to our Honor's society AKD. As a genuin Austrian I contributed vegan „Linzertorte" - Bars and found out that Linzertorte is the oldest known torte-recipe in the world. Here it comes in vegan style, after a recipe in Siue Moffat. 1973. „Licking The Beaters“, found in the fantastic bookshelf of Suz&Dana. I hope to excite Elke e_mu Faltenschoss (and others?), when sharing the recipe:

Cream ¾ cup apple sauce, 1 c sugar and 1 tsp grated lemon rind. Mix 1 ¼ cup flour (I needed some more) 1 cup grounded almonds, ½ tsp cinnamon, ¼ tsp cloves and a pinch salt. Add together, knead dough. Take ¼ of the dough and form 2 balls, wrap in wax paper and chill for 2 hours. Pat the larger dough ball into a greased rectangular pan, spread ¾ cup raspberry jam and cover with a criss cross of stripes from the remaining small dough ball. Bake for 25 minutes with 375° (190°Celsius). Let sit for a couple of days before eating (if you accomplish).

PS: Davea, my roommate, was disgusted by the cake, her comment on the vegan thingy was: "Well, Dani, it is not your fault..." :-)

Last week I spent a reasonable time at the campus of Kent State University. As we have a joint PhD-program with Kent I am also doing classes there and go for a 40 minutes ride at least once a week. I took some time to look at the campus which is a very important historical site.

On May 4, 1970 four students were shot to death and nine were wounded by the police near the memorial shown above, while demonstrating for peace and against the U.S. invasion of Cambodia.

Not only the memorial of Bruno Ast but also other sculptures and landmarks memorize this indiscribable scene of statal violence, which was followed by decades of trials. Above you see a scultpure with a deliberate bullet hole. I explored it together with Julianne, with whom I had a nice chat and a cigarette.
